BIOGRAPHY
Exactly five months after Groundhog Day, Nathan McMahan came disoriented
and inquisitive into a world racing to get to the moon. Old enough
to be enraptured by the vivid rainbow colors of mid sixties television,
he quickly fell head long into the seedy, addictive world of Adam West,
Burt Ward and BATMAN. Life would never be the same. Star Trek, Mission:
Impossible, James Bond, KISS and Monty Python kept him sated well through
high school and into a prolonged career as a professional student.
Born and bred in the wide open red clay and sandstone prairies of Central
Oklahoma, Nathan McMahan holds a Bachelors of University Studies in Theatre
and English with a minor in Journalism from Oklahoma State University,
a Masters in Psychology from Oral Roberts University and a Bachelors
in Motion Picture Production from the University of Central Florida.
He has spent thirteen years as a Water Park supervisor, fifteen years
in the restaurant industry as a waiter, bartender, service director and
Kaptain Kaos, three years touring and playing drums/percussion with the
Christian music group "Rescued" and 10 years in the television
and film industry in Central Florida.
After an internship in the camera department on the Amblin Production "seaQuest" and
an extended stint as a Producer’s Assistant on the Disney/MGM backlot,
Nathan settled into a freelance career in production. Over the years
he has worked in varied capacities from Producer, Director, Writer, AD,
Camera Operator, Production Manager, Location Scout and Manager to Transportation
Captain, Craft Service and the ubiquitous Production Assistant. Universal
Studios, Walt Disney World, International Marketing, SeaWorld, Turner
Television, Good Morning America, BBC, ESPN, and ABC are just a few of
he companies with which he has an association. The former managing editor
of the Florida Performer, a local industry trade newspaper, he has also
directed projects for HSN, Lynx, Cambridge Homes and Century III in Orlando,
FL and produced video segments for On Line Productions for such clients
as Darden, ADP and OOST.
He is currently producing and directing the fifth season of Ron Hazelton’s
Housecalls after completing 3 seasons as the UPM for the nationally syndicated
traveling home improvement television series and is prepping several
feature film and television series possibilities. His most recent film,
a 16mm comic short "Student Loan" is presently working the
film festival circuit.
An avid snow skier, skydiver and scuba diver, who lists horses and rappelling
among his hobbies, Nathan is a published playwright. He keeps house with
his wife, Barbara, fifteen reptiles, two parakeets, a blue lobster and
three beagles, Wasabi, Sake and Dharma.
I was born in the year of the tiger and given the name of a prominent
biblical figure, a man of conviction and a speaker of hard truth. I have
had, in the past, a considerable gift with words and an eye for bright,
festive color. I once had tremendous compassion and an overwhelming sense
of self righteousness. I have grown older, less wise and more shallow,
less introspective and more cynical. And yet I still harbor a great and
real hope for the future.
I live with but a few simple precepts. In any decision always do the
next right thing. I make no excuses and live as much as I am able in
peace and without fear. There is an immutable price for everything and
consequences for every action. One must accurately and without unrealistic
preconceptions weigh those costs before embarking on any venture. If
one is prepared to pay the cost and face the consequences, sally forth
and drive full steam into the heart of the storm. If not, steer a clear
and wide course. Not all battles need be fought and most are not worthy
of your attention. If you must fight, fight with all the conviction and
grist you can muster. Fight without the hope of a new dawn.
You will rarely change anther’s conceits. Only they have the power
to do that. Deep philosophical conversations are for drama and argument’s
sake only. No one should deny himself a good well heeled debate or a
lively round of devil’s advocate even in the face of overwhelming
common sense. But keep in mind the playing field. There is nothing so
serious it can not be joked about, nor any situation a little levity
can not but improve or a police officer make worse. If it does not gather
food or lift the spirit what purpose does it serve?
Believe in whatever you so choose and allow each and all the freedom
and right as individuals to make that choice for themselves and do not
begrudge them if their choice is contrary to your own. Allow them the
latitude to weigh their own cost. Gravity is law as are all the forces
of nature, but the golden rule is choice.
The key to life rests in two things: sensible shoes and clean bowels.
And change, for good or ill, does not come without inconvenience.
